Wednesday, 23 August 2017 : Traffic was at a crawl along the Penang Bridge during morning rush hour on the second day of the partial closure of the emergency lane on the mainland-bound side.
The closure of a 1.4km stretch along the mid span of the bridge began on Tuesday with slightly heavy traffic recorded during evening peak hours.
The scheduled lane closure and traffic diversion is being implemented for PLUS Malaysia Bhd to undertake comprehensive maintenance and inspection work on the bridge cables.
PLUS Malaysia Bhd chief operating officer Mohammad Fuad Khusairi said last week that the year-long closures of lanes was for bridge maintenance, which were needed every four years.
The emergency lane on the mainland-bound side will be closed between KM6.8 and KM5.4.
From 4pm to 8pm daily, a lane on the other side will be closed to create a contraflow lane for the mainland-bound side.
From Feb 22 to Aug 21 next year, it will be the island-bound side’s turn, with the emergency lane closed between KM4.1 and KM5.8.
Between 6am and 10am daily, one lane on the mainland-bound direction will be used for contraflow, for island-bound rush hour traffic.
