Taipei – Kenya runners sweep 2016 Taipei Marathon


Runners from Kenya dominated the 2016 Taipei Marathon, taking the top place in both the men’s and women’s categories, while Taiwan’s best performance was a fifth place finish by Hsieh Chien-ho in the women’s race, according to the event organizer.

Sammy Kitwara of Kenya completed the men’s 42-kilometer marathon in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 59 seconds to snatch the men’s title, smashing the previous record of 2:10:24 held by Ethiopia’s Yemane Tsegay Adhane in 2011, according to Chinese Taipei Road Running Association.

Kitwara’s achievements earned him NT$800,000 (US$25,004) in prize money for winning the top title and an additional NT$1 million for breaking the record, the association said.

In the women’s marathon, Kenyan runner Mercy Jerotich Kibarus took the title in 2:36:33.

Hsieh Chien-ho finished fifth in a time of 2:43:25, achieving Taiwan’s best performance in the race.

Chiang Chieh-wen was Taiwan’s best male runner in the race, finishing sixth in a time of 2:20:59.

In the half marathon races, Taiwan’s Chou Ting-yin won the men’s race, completing the 21km distance in 1:08:34, while Tsao Chun-yu clocked 1:19:05 to finish third in the women’s event.
