US agency confirms air bag safety probe into 30 million vehicles

WASHINGTON: U.S. auto safety investigators said on Tuesday they have opened a probe into 30 million vehicles built by nearly two dozen automakers that have potentially defective Takata air bag inflators.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an engineering analysis into an estimated 30 million U.S. vehicles from the 2001 through 2019 model years, Reuters first reported on Sunday, citing a document that had not been made public. The agency confirmed the new probe on Tuesday and said it applied to 1,384 different vehicle models.

No immediate safety risk has been identified and drivers do not need to take action, the agency said.

Chevrolet Bolt EV battery production resumes

WASHINGTON: General Motors Co said on Monday that battery production for its recalled Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle had resumed and that battery replacements will begin next month.

GM said supplier LG battery plants in Holland and Hazel Park, Michigan, have resumed production and LG is adding capacity to provide more battery cells to GM.

Last week, the largest U.S. automaker said it would extend a shutdown of a Michigan assembly plant to mid-October following a new recall of its Bolt electric vehicles over battery issues after 13 reported fires. GM declined Monday to say when it might resume production of the vehicles.

GM shares recovered some of their earlier losses after the announcement, closing down 3.8% at $49.37.

Chip supply, testing woes to further curb light vehicle production in 2021

Semiconductor shortages and the delayed packaging and testing of the chips will cause production of global light vehicles to drop by five million this year, data firm IHS Markit said on Thursday, marking the biggest cut to its outlook in nine months.

Citing supply chain challenges, IHS said it was cutting its light vehicle production forecast by 6.2% for 2021 and 9.3% for 2022, to stand at 75.8 million units and 82.6 million units, respectively.

Packaging and testing operations within the semiconductor sector in Malaysia were impacted due to the government's lockdown measures in early June, IHS said, compounding difficulties in an already constrained supply chain.

"Our interpretation of the situation in Mala

Shifting into top gear in Q4

KUALA LUMPUR: The automotive industry could see a surge in sales in the last quarter of 2021, backed by pent-up demand post-lockdown and car buyers capitalising on the final months of the vehicle sales tax exemption.

Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) president Datuk Aishah Ahmad said orders for new vehicles have picked up since the government’s economic relaxation measures allowed automotive players to resume operations since the middle of last month.

“Car companies are seeing more showroom traffic and receiving encouraging orders due to the sales tax exemption,” she told StarBiz

Aishah is optimistic that vehicle sales could see a pick-up in the final quarter of the year.

“Yes, definitely,” she said, adding however that MAA was still maintaining its total industry volume (TIV) forecast for 2021. “We are still
