Recently released repeat offender behind bars again after attempting to rob senior citizen

KUALA LUMPUR: A repeat offender that had just been released from jail is back in custody again after robbing a senior citizen.

City deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Yahaya Othman, in a press conference at the Cheras police headquarters on Thursday (Dec 9), said that the 29-year-old suspect was caught after a crime prevention patrol saw the incident occur near Taman Connaught.

“The incident on Dec 6 was witnessed by a crime prevention patrol from the Cheras police headquarters. The police successfully arrested the man when he tried to escape with the female victim’s bag.

“A penknife was also seized during the arrest. Checks on the suspect showed that he had just been released from prison around a month ago and that he had 25 prior criminal and drug-related offences,” he said.

The suspect had been remanded until Dec 13 and DCP Yahaya said that the man tested positive for drugs.

In an unrelated case, the police have arrested a 55-year-old man for allegedly robbing convenience stalls in Cheras.

“The arrest was made on Dec 6 after surveillance was conducted at a housing area in Taman Bukit Segar.

“During the arrest, several items were seized including a knife, two helmets and a motorcycle believed to have been used during the robbery,” he said.

The arrest was made following a prior case with losses of around RM3,832.

While three cases had been linked to the suspect, the police were still investigating if he was involved with other robberies.

“He tested positive for drugs and has been remanded until Dec 13,” he said.

Investigations are underway to determine if other suspects were involved in the robberies
