NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Russell Martin plans to play for Team Canada and Marcus Stroman likely will be in the starting rotation for Team USA at the World Baseball Championship.
But how about the Mexico Jays?
With word that Toronto’s closer Roberto Osuna will be a key part of the Mexico pitching staff at the event next March, manager Edgar Gonzalez said he would like to add Aaron Sanchez and Marco Estrada as well.
“Hopefully the process of getting permission with the Blue Jays goes right,” Gonzalez said on Monday. “Toronto has always been very cooperative. We’re trying to get a lot of their players and we haven’t had any problems yet.”
The Jays will have some say in the matter and with the workload the three pitchers had in 2016, there would be reason to be leery. The fresher the arms come April the better, obviously.
But general manager Ross Atkins said on Monday that the players in question will be free to participate if they are healthy and in shape come tournament time.
