Malaysian actress Sarah Lian wins film award in Los Angeles

Tuesday, 7 Feb 2017 :  Actress Sarah Lian woke up to good news on Monday (Feb 6) morning when she was named Best Supporting Actress by the Los Angeles Film Awards.

LA Film Awards is a monthly film competition by the Internet Movie Database (IMDb).

Lian, 33, received the award for her role in the Hong Kong–US production Jasmine.

In the psychological thriller directed by Dax Phelan, Lian plays a struggling actress.

“I think Anna (her character) is misunderstood. She’s an actress trying to prove herself. She gets involved in the wrong things and that sort of becomes the catalyst for some conflicts,” she shared during a phone interview.

Lian, who found out about her win through a friend on Facebook, described the achievement as an “honour”.

“I’m just incredibly grateful to be a part of a project that has received many accolades from around the world. Jasmine is the gift that keeps on giving.

“I’m also thankful for other opportunities that came along thanks to my work in Jasmine,” the affable actress said.

Jasmine also stars The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift actor Jason Tobin and Hong Kong actress Eugenia Yuan. The film is about a man, played by Tobin, who struggles to overcome the death of his wife.

Jasmine premiered at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2015.

Apart from Lian’s Best Supporting Actress Win, Jasmine also received six other LA Film Awards accolades for Film Of The Month, Best Actor (Tobin), Best Editing (Chris Chan Lee), Best Cinematography (Guy Livneh) and Best Director (Phelan).

In September last year, Jasmine won 11 awards at the Los Angeles Independent Film Awards including Best Picture, Director and Supporting Actress for Lian.

The Taiping-born TV personality is currently filming a miniseries with Remy Ishak and Tiz Zaqyah.

“In this miniseries, I speak Mandarin, Hokkien, English and Malay,” she offered.
