Monday, 21 August 2017 : A long wait for a Rugby Sevens gold medal for Malaysia in the SEA Games is finally over
The men’s team produced a scintillating performance en route to a 22-7 victory over Singapore in the final of the 29th edition of the Games at the Petaling Jaya Municipal Stadium in Kelana Jaya today.
Buoyed by the presence of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Youth and Sports Minister YB Brig Gen Khairy Jamaluddin, the host denied the Singaporeans of any chance inf making progress and in the process created its own history.
Muhammad Azwan Zuwairi, Muhammad Zulhisham Rasli, Mohamad Nur Azri Azmi and team captain Zulkiflee Azmi were instrumental in converting tries. Singapore’s only try came through Nicholas Yau.
Malaysia’s entry into the final today was secured after beating Indonesia 75-0 in their final group match. They had earlier lost 12-7 to Thailand. The Thais has caused the biggest by defeating 2015 SEA Games champions Philippines 26-7 to take the bronze medal.
The Malaysian women’s 7s team also made history when they won the bronze medal with a 7-5 win over Philippines. Siti Farhanita Maddin provided Malaysia’s sole try and Rozliana Mohd Ridwan converted.
Thailand and Singapore saw the repeat of 2015 final when Thailand beat the republic 17-10 to win the gold medal.
