Google is rolling out its latest Android Nougat update for the firm’s own-brand handsets, namely Pixel models and a handful of compatible Nexus devices (6P, 5X, 6, 9 and Player). These models make up just 0.4% of the Android handsets currently functioning worldwide.

The update doesn’t affect many Android users, since the vast majority of devices sold today still run Android 6 (Marshmallow). Nougat should be rolled out to more recent models from the likes of Samsung, Huawei, Sony and HTC during Q1 2017.

This latest version inevitably corrects a host of bugs. However, it also brings application shortcuts directly to the homescreen, introduces round icons and adds a whole new range of emojis.

Launched at the end of the summer, new features in Android Nougat include a multi-window mode for using two apps side by side (on a tablet) or one above the other (on a smartphone). Android Nougat also helps save on battery use and data use.

Plus, this Android OS offers a simplified notifications system that’s quicker to use, as well as a “picture in picture” (PIP) mode for pinning videos in the corner of the screen. It offers more than 1,500 emojis and is compatible with the Google Daydream virtual reality platform.
