KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has welcomed the news that existing illegal foreign workers hired by Malaysian bosses would be given temporary work passes.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said it was very kind of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to make this decision.
There had been requests from farmers, such as fruit farmers in Johor, to employ foreigners to solve the problem of labour shortage.
“They cannot find Malaysians to work for them even with a salary of RM2,000 to RM2,500,” he said.
The Government also opened up employment of foreign workers to four more sectors – poultry farming, mining and quarrying, cargo handling and hospitality and tourism.
Previously, only construction, manufacturing, furniture-making and plantation industries were allowed to hire foreign workers.
Dr Wee said he would be able to make more comments after he studies the full report on this decision.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai also welcomed the relaxation in rules, saying the move would further help improve the efficiency of the ports.
He said Port Klang for instance, had a shortage of 1,400 workers.
