NYON (Switzerland): The governing body of European football is still unclear about the latest format of the World Cup and was not sure whether to vote to expand the tournament, its president said yesterday.
Aleksander Ceferin said the European Football Union (UEFA) are getting information from the media as the International Football Federation (FIFA) has yet to make feedback on their application involves the details of the proposal concerned.
FIFA council members who comprise 37 members including seven from UEFA will vote in January to determine the format of the tournament’s most recent starting 2026.
FIFA president, Gianni Infantino appointed last February will fulfill his promise in the campaign to improve the team in the World Cup from 32 teams to 40 teams starting in 2026 edition.
He then announced that he wanted 48 teams in the tournament including the knockout rounds followed the group stage.
However, he changed his mind earlier this week after proposing 48 teams will be divided into 16 groups involving three teams in each group.
