SERDANG: Nearly 45,000 applications were received this year from those aspiring to become teachers with about two-thirds meeting the criteria.
According to Deputy Education Minister, Datuk P. Kamalanathan, 1,600 were eventually chosen from those who met the requirements.
One of the conditions made more stringent was that those intending to join the teaching profession must have at least 5As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) instead of 3As.
Attending and presenting scrolls to over 10,000 graduates the Institut Pendidikan Guru graduation day yesterday, Kamalanathan congratulated the graduates stating that he was proud of teachers today as most of them are 9As and 10As SPM holders.
This shows that students in schools will be taught by the best teachers. There are close to 430,000 teachers in primary and secondary schools.
As for graduates who have not received a posting, the ministry would find a solution by the first quarter of 2017.
