Trend Testing:Head To Toe Yellow

810-1
This is the thing about full look, fearless colour – which was all over the spring/summer catwalks at Chloe, Valentino, Emilio Pucci, and Chanel – to go from browsing an eye-popping suit (in an ideal world: Gucci’s fuchsia tailoring) to actually wearing it to a party, on the tube or to the office takes a leap of faith, something more than style advice alone. We’ve grown so used to wearing the darkest colours in a wardrobe as a means to blending in within the sea of black clothes that have defined the dress code of the last three decades. Dark clothes provide a security blanket. A well-cut black dress? Chic. The same in cobalt blue? Brave. Austere fashion has become the norm on the street, prevailing over a risk taking colour palette. It’s not been the done thing to sport head to toe colour for fear of looking ridiculous and out of place, like a children’s TV presenter in a boardroom.

But, brace yourself – there is a change coming.

The look I’ve been trend testing at work this week comprised a banana yellow Jacquemus sweater dress with oversized quarter-back-style shoulders (purchased on a whim from Ssense) and mango-hued opaque tights.

(I’m hooked on wearing a rainbow of tights at the moment as a means to reviving last season’s party dresses). Which sounds ridiculous (OK, the shoulders might not yet be for everyone) but you’ll have to give me a minute here.

I felt brighter wearing it: my hair colour popped; the lazy purple-ish eye pencil I haphazardly scrawl on each morning felt considered. Yes, I added a thick black belt and slouchy black Isabel Marant boots for polish – but, otherwise I was in it up to my neck. Literally.
