Health DG: Four Covid-19 cases detected after screenings of those leaving for Langkawi

PUTRAJAYA: Four Covid-19 cases were discovered following screening exercises carried out at air and sea entry points to Langkawi.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the four were among 3,454 individuals who were screened before leaving for Langkawi.

One case each was detected at the Penang and Sultan Abdul Aziz Airport in Subang.

“Two positive cases were discovered at the Kuala Perlis jetty,” he said in his tweet on Friday (Sept 17).

On Thursday (Sept 16), which was the first day of the Langkawi travel bubble initiative, five individuals tested positive for Covid-19 after undergoing screenings at air and sea entryway to Langkawi.

Langkawi police: No compound notices issued on island resort’s first day of reopening

LANGKAWI: Not a single compound notice was issued here on Thursday (Sept 16), the first day this island resort reopened under the travel bubble scheme, says the police.

Langkawi OCPD Asst Comm Shariman Ashari said although no compound notices were issued, police would continue monitoring standard operating procedure (SOP) compliance among locals and tourists alike.

“So far, SOP compliance among the public at tourist attractions has been good,” he said during a SOP compliance operation at the popular Pantai Cenang area.

ACP Shariman said police will take a “softer approach” at the initial stage by advising tourists to keep the SOP in mind, but will not hesitate to act against those who violate the rules.

AirAsia: Full flight load to Langkawi signals strong rebound for domestic air travel

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): AirAsia’s inaugural service from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi on Thursday (Sept 16) morning under the travel bubble recorded a 100% flight load, the carrier says, signifying a strong rebound for domestic air travel.

The low-cost carrier said the maiden flight, the first of nine scheduled daily flights from Kuala Lumpur, left KLIA2 at 9.50am utilising an Airbus A321neo.

"Aside from Kuala Lumpur (63 flights weekly), AirAsia also has flights to Langkawi departing from Penang (14 times weekly), Johor Baru (seven times weekly), Ipoh (three times weekly) and Kota Baru (three times weekly), making a total of 90 weekly flights," it said in a statement.

Tourism Ministry targets 200,000 domestic tourists to Langkawi

LANGKAWI (Bernama): The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) is targeting about 200,000 domestic tourists to Langkawi between this month and December.

Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said about 30,000 tourists are expected to visit the resort island this month following its reopening under a tourism bubble pilot project beginning Thursday (Sept 16).

She said the number of tourist arrivals today might be the best indication for Langkawi’s performance in the tourism bubble pilot project.
