Monday, 21 August 2017 :  Terengganu  ruler Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin led Malaysia to two gold medals and one silver in the 80km Equestrian Endurance race today.

His Majesty strode on the back of his mount Rtes Annaversary to win the individual gold in a time of eight hours 23 minutes and four seconds at the Terengganu International Endurance Park in Lembah Bidong.

He was followed closely by Mohd Bulkhari Rozali (JQ Tuan Junior), who won the silver whilst Mohammad Fuad Hashim finished third astride his horse Mora Makaka.

However, competition rules forbid riders from the same team to win all three medals, thus, denying Mohammad Fuad the bronze. Thailand’s Warit Khuntaraporn, who came in sixth position, was awarded the bronze instead.

The team gold was claimed by the Malaysian team comprising Muhammad Fuad, Mohd Adhwa Embong and Azizatul Asma Abdullah, who rode Mora Franka and Mora Tishaka respectively.

Malaysia’s sixth rider, Mohd Yusran Yusuf was forced to retire midway in the race after his horse Castlebar Twilight limped off injured.

Sultan Mizan credited Malaysia’s gold medal winning feat a solid team effort.

“We worked in cohesion, moved together and our strategy worked. Although it was a long race, it did not seem boring or lethargic as we galloped energetically,” said Sultan Mizan.

“I would like to congratulate all – from the trainers, horse handlers, veterinarians, officials to the state government, for helping us achieve our target and working tirelessly for a successful race which went without any untoward incident.” he said.

The ruler hopes Malaysia’s success would boost its chances of hosting the Asian Endurance Cup and the World Junior Endurance Championship next year.

Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman had earlier flagged off the race.

Apart from Malaysia, the other teams were from Cambodia, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei.
