The Sabah State Art Gallery is taking the virtual exhibition route for the 36th Sabah Annual Art Selection 2021 (Karya Pilihan Tahunan Negeri Sabah) to celebrate this year's winners and participants.

Viewers can check out Freandy Jose’s stunning pencil work piece Posogit – Obiyai Koi Noh Oi Aki (Posogit – Ampunilah Kami Wahai Aki), which is this year’s Sabah Annual Art Selection winning entry and later take a virtual stroll through the rest of the exhibition.

Jose’s work Posogit – Obiyai Koi Noh Oi Aki centres on a ritual to appease the mountain spirits on Mount Kinabalu. This work refers to the devastating 5.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Mount Kinabalu on June 5, 2015, killing 18 people in its wake. The earthquake was felt in 12 districts in Sabah and caused major damage to areas within a 100km radius.

The 36th Sabah Annual Art Selection 2021 is a year-long exhibition.

PANGGUNG RAKYAT: ZAPIN JOHOR

Date and Time: Oct 23, 8.30pm

Cultural Economy Development Agency’s (Cendana) Panggung Rakyat series continues with the traditional art form of zapin from Johor.

Zapin Melayu Johor was created as a hybrid of dance and music, one of the earliest art forms in the Malay archipelago dated from the time of the migration of the Hadhrami Arabs to South-East Asia.

As a major part of Johor’s cultural and traditional treasures, zapin is usually performed at social events.

This programme, done in collaboration with the Nusantara Performing Arts Centre and Yayasan Warisan Johor, is part of Art In The City.

ONLINE LECTURE: THE OPERA AWAKENS

Date and Time: Oct 23, 1.30pm

Kuala Lumpur-based Early Music (Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque period) ensemble Wicked Music People (WMP) will be presenting an online lecture as part of the KL City Opera’s digital opera festival OperaKUL 2021.

The online lecture will explore the beginnings of opera and its crucial role in the birth of the baroque era in music.

The group will be playing excerpts from operas by Monteverdi and Purcell (specially recorded for OperaKUL). A Q&A session will be held after the performances.

The Opera Awakens will be streamed for free on the KL City Opera’s Facebook page and via Zoom.

VIRTUAL CONCERT: Serious Play Improv Lab

Date and time: Oct 23, 8pm

The small community of experimental artists and musicians are finally returning to the stage for Serious Play Improv Lab (SPIL) tonight (Oct 23) at The Percussion Store at Jalan Panggong in Kuala Lumpur.

The upcoming SPIL – SPIL 061 – will feature artist-curator and vocal improviser Kok Siew Wai (voice), free jazz and improvised saxophonist Yong Yandsen (tenor sax), Chinese dizi and xiao (both types of Chinese flutes) improviser Yii Kah Hoe and Ping Wei, a saxophonist who performs experimental music.

If you can’t be there at the concert, you can stream it live for free as a SPIL outreach initiative.

FESTIVAL: LIVING ARTS CULTURAL FESTIVAL 2021

Date and Time: Oct 29-31, 3pm

The Living Arts Cultural Festival highlights the uniqueness of world cultural heritage and the importance of conservation and preservation efforts.

This festival brings together the arts practiced by communities from all over the world that have been recognised by Unesco and gazetted as National Heritage in 15 countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Turkey and South Korea.

Malaysian traditional art forms such as Silat, Mak Yong and Dondang Sayang, Turkey’s traditional archery, Cambodia’s classic khmer dance and the Philippines’ epic poem practice darangen are on the list.

Living Arts Cultural Festival 2021 will be streamed for free via CloudTheatre.
