Apple Watch owners who can’t get enough of Pokémon Go can rejoice, for Niantic has just launched the app for the Apple Watch.

The Pokémon Go app functions like a workout app on the Apple Watch so you need to launch it and it will log your calories, steps, distance and heart rate while performing all the usual Pokémon Go functions.

While you don’t necessarily need to have your iPhone on when using the Apple Watch app, you do need to launch the updated app at least once and give permission for the iPhone app to update and share your activity and location with Apple Health.

According to the official Pokémon Go blog, the Apple Watch app is able to:

  • Log each play session as a workout, with gameplay counting toward filling your personal Activity rings on the Apple Watch
  • Receive notifications about nearby Pokémon
  • Count distance toward hatching Pokémon Eggs and receiving Candy with your Buddy Pokémon
  • Receive notifications about PokeStops nearby and collect items from them
  • Receive notifcations when eggs hatch and medals awarded

It looks like Niantic may have rushed the release of the Apple Watch app a little to launch it before Christmas or to silence rumours of its cancellation.
