SIBU: An Indonesian working in an oil palm estate in Jalan Sibu -Tanjung Manis died after being struck by lightning on Wednesday (Oct 27).

Sibu OCPD, Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, said in the 4pm incident, the victim, Pardik Ali, 49, was about to board a lorry after finishing the day's work of harvesting oil palm fruit bunches when he was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm.

"The driver of the lorry found the victim unconscious near the vehicle, as he was about to send him back to the workers' quarters," he said.

ACP Stanley said initial investigations revealed that the lorry driver was waiting in the vehicle when lightning struck.

“He alighted from the lorry and found the deceased lying in a state of unconsciousness. The deceased was then taken to the plantation office,” he said.

According to Stanley, the case investigating officer who conducted the examination of the deceased’s body found there were burn marks at the back of his body.

“We believe the victim died at the scene as a result of being struck by lightning,” he added.

Police had classified the case as sudden death until the autopsy report was obtained.
