Malaysia head coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee said that he respected the surprise decision of JDT players Aidil Zafuan and Safiq Rahim to quit the national team, and will scout for their replacements in the second half of the domestic football season.
In a brief statement issued on the Malaysian FA website, Ong admitted his surprise at the pair’s decision, something he described as ‘a loss’, but he ultimately respected it.
“Of course I was shocked by the announcement, but at the same time I am sure that they have thought things through before making that decision.
“For me it’s a loss, but if this is their decision, we have to respect it because they surely have discussed it with their families prior to making the decision,” explained the 45-year old coach.
Ong added that he will start looking for Safiq and Aidil’s replacements in the second half of the domestic football season.
“…at the same time we have to think about the search for their replacements in the national team, whom we will scout in the remaining Super League matches and the Malaysia Cup which began last night (Tuesday),” he explained.

“However, if circumstances change and they want to don the national team colours again in the future, of course we will reevaluate their position based on their performance at the time,” Ong let on.
On Tuesday, Aidil and Safiq announced that they were quitting the national team, a day after JDT owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim expressed his anger at the national team setup, for allegedly getting five of his players who joined the Malaysia team tour of Oceania injured.
Several more Malaysia squad members who play for the Southern Tigers are expected to announce their international retirement in the next few days.
