After Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) defender Aidil Zafuan and midfielder Safiq Rahim announced their retirement from international football on Tuesday, on Thursday their teammates S. Kunanlan and Amirulhadi Zainal followed suit.
Both of them made their announcements within the space of a few of hours of each other’s announcement, citing the same reason expressed by Safiq and Aidil; to give way to the younger players.
Questions will surely be raised now, on whether more JDT players will announce their departure from the Malaysia national team in the coming few days.
Regular Malaysia internationals who play for the Southern Tigers who are expected to follow suit include Fazly Mazlan, Amri Yahyah, Fadhli Shas, Izham Tarmizi, Farizal Marlias, Junior Eldstal, Azamuddin Akil, Mahali Jasuli, S. Chanturu, and very recent signing Azrif Nasrulhaq.
On Wednesday, Malaysia head coach Ong Kim Swee expressed his surprise at Safiq and Aidil’s decision, however he added that he respects their decision, and clarified that he is not closing the door on them altogether should they change their minds.
