The man has never thought of himself as a fashion icon, yet here he is, the latest face of a luxury watchmaker. Alvin Chong, having made a name within the Malaysian entertainment scene, is now conquering the style industry too.
He was recently appointed as “friend of the brand” for Longines. Starring in a series of campaign images, the new role will, of course, show off his good looks and impeccable dressing.
“Watches speak of a man’s personality and I think it’s essential for men when it comes to official or important events,” Chong points out, when contacted via email.
He also shares on how a timepiece can be a fitting accessory to complement his outfits. He sees it as the item of choice when it comes to styling.
“I tend to go for more classic, elegant lines. Like The Longines Master Collection, it is my perfect watch that always fits every occasion.”
Nevertheless, Chong, 30, remains reticent about being credited with having a great fashion sense. He says it is more the effort of the team that manages his appearances. Although modest about his fashion influence, Chong’s Instagram seems to be all about the way he dresses. He posts up OOTD (outfit of the day) snaps frequently – and they feature big brands like Fendi, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior and more.
He has also graced the pages of several fashion magazines in Malaysia.
Perhaps it is a certain “realness” that sets him apart from other celebrities. In past interviews, he has mentioned about dressing the way he wants and not according to trends.
He has also said that he only chooses comfortable clothes and prefers to be thought of as a minimalist.
Man of many talents
While currently known more for his acting, Chong actually started off his career as a singer. He took part in the Astro Star Quest reality programme back in 2012. It was only in 2014 that he made the leap onto the big screen with Mandarin film 3 Brothers.
Two years after that, he caught the eye of the Malay entertainment scene when he appeared in the popular television drama series Dia Semanis Honey.
When he starred in Suri Hati Mr. Pilot alongside Neelofa and Fattah Amin, it really expanded his fanbase. It was reported that his Instagram followers swelled to over 150,000 – which cemented his fame in Malaysia. They now number over 1.3 million on the social media platform.
His journey has been nothing short of a steep learning curve. Chong had to learn how to speak Malay fluently by asking his friends for help as he comes from a Chinese-speaking background. His grasp of the English language was poor, as well.
Yet, he recorded his first English single in 2017. It was a product in collaboration with Isabela Vinzon, a Filipino singer who made her name in The Voice Teens Philippines. From singing to acting and now, modelling (well, sort of), it seems that Chong is able to transition from one industry to another effortlessly.
On the subject of making the most of his time, his advice is to always seize the moment. He has even made it a life mantra of sorts.
“Time is very precious, it’s the only thing you can’t buy with money. One thing I learned over the past years is if you want to do anything, don’t think and just do it, especially when you know you would regret it if you don’t,” Chong concludes.
