Saturday, 6 May 2017 : Mona Barthel reached her first WTA final in two years by beating top seed Barbora Strycova in the last four of the J&T Banka Prague Open.
Unseeded German Barthel rallied to upset Strycova 3-6 6-2 6-3 and faces another Czech in Saturday’s final after Kristyna Pliskova defeated Jelena Ostapenko 6-4 6-2.
Barthel, who won through in two hours and seven minutes, reached a career-high world ranking of 23 in March 2013, but slipped down to 183 after being dogged by illness last year.
Pliskova, also unseeded, overcame Latvian Ostapenko in one hour and eight minutes to reach her second WTA final.
Ostapenko had completed a 6-3 4-6 6-3 win in her quarter-final against Croatia’s Ana Konjuh earlier on Friday.
At the Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem in Rabat, top-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will play Francesca Schiavone in Saturday’s final.
Pavlyuchenkova, who will play in her second straight WTA final after winning her first title of the season in Monterrey last month, reeled off the last eight games to beat Italy’s Sara Errani 6-4 6-0.
Italy’s Schiavone, bidding for her second clay court title in three weeks following her recent success in Bogota, beat Varvara Lepchenko for the first time in 12 years, advancing 7-5 6-4 in just over two hours.
