KUALA LUMPUR – Maybank Open golf tournament will take place for the second time at the Saujana Golf and Country Club on February 9 to 12 next year with this edition featuring twists when introducing the category of ASEAN.
This category is the first of its kind to be introduced in the international arena to attract more major players in the region to join the competition.
The competition offers a total US $ 3 million (RM13.38 million) would also join the ranks of top players from Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam who will be selected by the Professional Golf Association of each country based on the Order of Merit roaming accompanied, Asian Tour, the Asian Development Tour and world rankings.
Maybank chairman Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd. Nor, said the new category of approaches used to assist the development of golf in the region because many countries have shown a significant increase.
“After seeing the rapid development of the region, I am very pleased to introduce the category of ASEAN in the next edition.
“Through this category more players in the region have the opportunity to play alongside the world’s elite player ranks in a tournament which is co European Tour and Asia,” he said when met here today.
2016 Masters champion, Danny Willett of the United Kingdom became the first player confirmed his participation to the tournament.
Willet Ryder Cup champion in 2016 with a European team happy to disclose his feelings to return to action in Malaysia.
“I played well here and I definitely will be back to Lekir the next year to give their best during the four days of the tournament,” he said.
