A MAN in Tamil Nadu, India, with only high school education passed himself off as a doctor and ran a clinic for 36 years before the law finally caught up with him, Malaysia Nanban reported.
Authorities in the state have stepped up enforcement in recent months after numerous cases of fake doctors were reported. Police in Tiruppur had set up a special unit to monitor suspected fake doctors in around 60 villages.
V. Thasan, 64, came under suspicion after reports claimed he was treating dengue patients with traditional and spiritual treatments, claiming these would cure them. With the authorities working to prevent a dengue epidemic in the state, police raided the man’s home and found that he only had secondary school education.
He was arrested and later sentenced to prison by a court for impersonating a doctor and treating patients without a medical licence. Residents who had been seeing the “doctor” for 36 years were shocked by the revelation.
