MALACCA: Malaysia is on track to become a major exporting nation of manufactured goods.
Second International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan said previously raw commodities such as rubber, palm and coconut oils were dominant.
“Although we only have a population of 31 million but our international trade increased by 1.5% in 2016, which is 1 of the highest among Asean countries,” he said after a working visit to Perfect Food Manufacturing (M) Sdn Bhd’s factory in Alor Gajah, near here.
Ong said his visit was aimed at identifying problems and providing solutions to small and medium enterprises.
He added that Perfect Food Manufacturing was a good example of a successful mid-range SME with an annual turnover of about RM370 million.
He added the Digital Free Trade Zone which will be launched by the Prime Minister in March is an indication of this.
“This is a great opportunity that we should take advantage of as e-commerce only makes up about 5.8% of Malaysia’s GDP currently.”
