Less than a week after clinching the Formula One (F1) world for the first time, Nico Rosberg made a sudden announcement of retirement from the sport.
The German, who played for the Mercedes AMG Petronas announced the decision to his fans on his Facebook page today.
“Since 25 years in racing, it’s always been my dream, ‘one thing’ would be Formula One world champion. Through hard work, pain, sacrifice, it became my goal. And now I’ve done it. I was climbing a mountain, I am at the top, so this is the right thing.
“Emotion is the strongest I now feel very grateful to everyone who supported me to make the dream a reality.
“This season, I tell you, it is very difficult. I struggled like crazy in all aspects after the disappointment of the last two years. It is driven by the motivation to reach the level that I never take.
“Of course it also affects the people I care about, it is the sacrifice of the whole family, put everything in order to achieve our goals.
“When I won the race in Suzuka, where destiny when it is in my own hands, the pressure intensifies and I started thinking about finishing my career in racing if I became world champion.
“On Sunday morning in Abu Dhabi, I know this is probably my last race and was feeling increasingly clear before I start the competition. I want to enjoy every experience, realizing it might be the last … And then the lights went out, I face the most intense 55 rounds in my life, “said 31-year-old driver.
Rosberg, who has won 23 races in his career, he decided to retire on Monday afternoon.
