HUTAN BANDAR BISTRO
These pepes are rare indeed, but luckily we just happened to find some being sold by an uncle manning a solitary mini charcoal grill outside Hutan Bandar Bistro in Johor Bahru. Made with fish paste in a similar style to otak-otak, these little darlings were made out of ikan tenggiri (Spanish mackerel). The difference is that that banana leaf-wrapped servings are smaller and also contain a differing variety of mixes with the fish paste; some vendors add in fruits for a sweeter taste!
