Tuesday, 4 April 2017 : Sarawak fans have requested on Lee Chong Wei’s Facebook for tickets to watch him play at the Malaysian Open in Kuching.
But the world No. 1 men’s singles shuttler is unable to fulfil their plea because all the tickets have been sold out for the US$600,000 (RM2.64mil) Premier Superseries, which begins in Kuching today.
“I feel sad for them. Many of them asked me for tickets on my Facebook, but there’s none to be given out,” said Chong Wei.
The entrance for today’s qualifying tournament is free. The ticket price for the main draw’s first round tomorrow is RM20 followed by RM30 (Thursday), Friday (RM40), Saturday (semi-finals, RM50) and Sunday (final, RM60).
When Sarawak last hosted the Malaysian Open in 2006, Chong Wei defeated Lin Dan of China in an epic final in the 4,000-capacity stadium.
“I hope the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will let the other states host the Malaysian Open in the future. It’s great if we can bring the Open tournaments to the states once in a while. It’ll give the fans a chance to watch their favourite players,” said Chong Wei after a training session at the Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya yesterday.
