Canon introduces the EOS M5

Canon’s latest mirrorless camera looks to all the world like a tiny DSLR, a departure from its siblings the M3 and M10 which look more like compact cameras.

There’s a good reason for this, unlike its siblings, the EOS M5 has an electronic viewfinder (EVF) which adds a viewfinder hump at the top, in addition to the many dials and buttons that mirror that of Canon’s own DSLRs.

During a presentation, Canon representatives say that the EOS M5 is aimed at more advanced photographers who want DSLR functionality but without the bulk.

In fact, the EOS M5 carries over many of the features from the company’s DSLRs – the M5 has a 24.2-megapixel APS-C Dual Pixel CMOS sensor, continuous shooting speeds of 7-frames-per-second (9-frames-per-second with the autofocus locked), a maximum standard ISO setting up to 25,600 and a 3.2in high-resolution tiltable touchscreen LCD on the back.

Similar to certain EOS DSLRs, the EOS M5’s Dual Pixel CMOS sensor allows for much faster autofocus using adjacent pixels to perform phase-detect (Canon calls it phase-difference) autofocus.

The camera also comes with both Bluetooth and WiFi built in for easy remote control of the camera and transferring of photos via your smartphone.

As far as video goes, the EOS M5 does not shoot 4K video, but instead shoots in FullHD 1080p at up to 60-frames-per-second.

While the EOS M5 can be bought body-only or with the standard EF-M 15-45mm kit lens, Canon is also introducing the EF-M 18-150mm superzoom as a kit lens option as well.

Like all the EOS M models, the M5 has its own EF-M mount, but can accept Canon’s EF DSLR lenses via an adapter.

For the first time, Canon is also launching its official online store on Lazada Malaysia and offering the EOS M5 and other cameras for purchase there.

Pre-order is open for the EOS M5 right now with shipping expected to be by the end of December.

Additionally pre-order customers from now until Dec 12 will get additional gifts, namely a 16GB SD card, EM-E2 neck strap, messenger bag and the EF-EOS M mount adapter.

The EOS M5 body only has a recommended retail price of RM4,699, while the bundle with the EF-M 15-45mm is priced at RM5,199.

The EOS M5 bundled with the EF-M 18-150mm lens will set you back RM6,399 but will only be shipping in the middle of January 2017.However, the EF-M 18-150mm lens is already available separately for RM2,069.
