Badminton: Rehiring Rexy Mainaky bodes well for BAM squad, says Chong Wei

KOTA KINABALU: The reappointment of Indonesian doubles legend Rexy Mainaky, 53, as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) deputy coaching director is a good choice for Malaysia, says Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

The former world number one shuttler said when Rexy returned to coach Indonesia and later Thailand, the performance of badminton teams there improved and their names were raised.

“First of all congratulations to coach Rexy, I think he is the best coach in the world.

“And now he is back in Malaysia, I think it is a good choice and he can share his knowledge, and I think he can work well with all the coaches and players here, that is the most important,” Lee said.

He said this when asked to comment on Rexy being rehired as the deputy coaching director for BAM during an official visit here in Sabah on Wednesday (Oct 27).

Rexy, whose contract with the Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT) ended this month, will report for duty at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara on Dec 1.

He will become the fifth Indonesian to join the BAM coaching set-up, which already consists of Hendrawan (men’s singles), Indra Wijaya (women’s singles), Flandi Limpele (men’s doubles) and Paulus Firman (mixed doubles).

Rexy had previously served as the national doubles coach from 2005-2012.

He was best remembered for transforming men’s doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong into world No. 1, as well as winning 2006 Asian Games gold and the 2007 All-England title.
