Badminton: Glorious day for China as they beat Japan to regain Uber Cup trophy

PETALING JAYAL China showed their determination to bag their 15th Uber Cup Finals title.

They took almost four hours to beat holders Japan 1-3 in the final at Ceres Arena in Aarhus on Saturday.

It was not the start that they hoped for when Olympics champion Chen Yufei put up a sluggish show to go down 18-21, 10-21 to a fired up Akane Yamaguchi in the first singles.

China came charging back in the first doubles to draw level but the win for Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan did not come easy.

In a match that went down the wire, the Olympics silver medal winners Qingchen-Yifan fought hard for one hour and 57 minutes to beat Yuki Fukushima-Mayu Matsutomo 29-27, 15-21, 21-18,

He Bingjiao made it look easy when she defeated Sayaka Takahashi 21-9, 21-18 in 44 minutes to put China in the lead at 2-1.

The second doubles could have gone either way but it was Huang Dongping-Li Wenmei who came through a closely-fought match to beat Misaki Matsutomo-Nami Matsuyama 24-22, 23-21 to hand China the Uber Cup victory.

China lost to Thailand in the semi-finals of the last edition in Bangkok, Thailand in 2018.
