7 Women’s Fashion Mistakes To Avoid This Summer
Now that summer is here, I have every reason to wear sleeveless tops, shorts and sandals. Meanwhile, as carefree I wish to dress, there are certain fashion rules we still have to follow. I admire the courage to dress creatively but it’s still important to dress appropriately. The following list contains some faux pas I’ve either experienced or witnessed. Let’s keep these in mind before we make the same mistakes
1. Too Revealing
One of the most common fashion mistakes during summer is being too casual. Crop tops, short shorts and flip-flops are all very tempting in the hot weather, but they may not be proper for the office. Tops that reveal too much cleavage or made of sheer fabric should be layered over an opaque camisole. No long tops on short shorts because the combo makes you look bottomless.
Leggings that are too thin are a strict no-no as they may expose your panty lines and too much of your curves. The waist shouldn’t sit too low as to reveal your underwear when you bend or sit. Pair your leggings with a longer top to prevent this from happening!
Does that mean you can’t look sexy at the office? Not in the least! Sleeveless tops or tube tops with cover-ups, V-backs, crop tops with high-waist pants and even mini skirts may be acceptable, depending on your company’s dress code. So are hot trends such as clavicle or shoulder cutouts, off-shoulder and halter necks. It would be wise to bare the shoulders, nape and wrists (shorter sleeves do look sexy), rather than the bust, underarms and hips. More often than not, it’s about the silhouette than the amount of skin exposed – think bodycon dresses and Jimmy Choo sandals.
2. Wrong Size
Many people tend to hide their problem areas with fabric. However, too much fabric or wearing something too slouchy only makes you look even plumper. Oversized is hardly chic. If you must wear an oversized top, try balancing it with skinny bottoms, or cinch it at the waist.
The same goes for clothes that are too tight. They may emphasize your bingo wings or muffin tops. Besides, being able to wear one size smaller doesn’t mean you have to. Ideally, your clothes should show off your best parts, flatter the curves and hide your critical spots.
3. Creased, Torn or Discolored
There are situations when faded, ripped or frayed tees and jeans look cool, like at outdoor concerts or at the beach. But if your stockings, cardigan or T-Shirt is pilling, it wouldn’t leave a good impression on anyone. A combination of faded shades of black is an eyesore in particular. Same for dirty shoes and deformed underwear. A crisply ironed shirt would smell and look so much nicer than a creased one.
So, fix that button or zip, remove that stain, and snip off those loose threads before you wear that garment again. If it can’t be fixed, it only means it’s time to scout for a new one!
4. Animal Prints
I’m always skeptical of animal prints – especially leopard print, which has been heavily abused in fashion. If I must put on some animal prints, I’d wear them as accessories instead of clothing. Animal print tights simply make you look too old or too wild. The same goes for mixed animal prints.
If you’re really into animal prints, make sure you make a unique and tasteful statement. Instead of golden tones such as leopards, tigers and giraffes, why not try black-and-whites similar to Dalmatians, cows or zebras, or replace a natural hue with a completely different palette? Try aquatic inspirations like tortoiseshell and croc-grain for more summery vibes! Also, make sure the print is on good fabric so it’ll look exquisite instead of cheap.
As someone who doesn’t fancy big brands, I have no fetish for monogram fashion items or any of the sort. For me, having one monogram item per outfit is the limit. Much as I’d like to show my support for certain brands, I wouldn’t like to be their walking advertisements. Expand your horizons to other graphics and patterns instead.
If you’re a student, it would be hard not to flaunt those new earrings or bag charm during the summer break. Just keep in mind that accessories may weigh you down if you wear too many. They’re meant to complement your outfit, not overwhelm you.
Again, try not to hide your extra pounds with fabric. No ruffled skirts over leggings or mini dresses over jeans – it makes your bottom look heavy. Also, avoid wearing a massive scarf over a structured jacket, which makes you look stout and neckless.
If you want to look slim at the bottom, try wearing cropped pants or ankle-skimming floral dresses with a nipped-in waist and a high neckline. To look slim on the upper body, try off-shoulder tops with adjustable straps to show clavicles, or belted tab-sleeve shirtdresses to cover the bingo wings and define your waist.
